Intent

At Moorhill, we aim to provide our children with the skills and knowledge for them to make healthy, active choices in their life and become physically confident to support their health and fitness. We understand the importance of a healthy body and a healthy mind, and we offer plentiful opportunities to enhance this knowledge and support them in their journey through life.

Children have access to a wide range of sports during their Physical education lessons and take part in physical activity at break and lunchtimes. We aim to provide the children with a passion for sport and foster their teamwork, leadership, and sportsmanship skills.

The curriculum map has been designed to ensure that the National Curriculum requirements are fulfilled and that children are developing fundamental basic skills and then progressing into playing a variety of sports. Children constantly develop and revisit their skills and knowledge, linking skills through different sports.

Implementation

Teachers use the Curriculum map to plan physical education lessons, following the requirements of The Early Years Foundation Stage Framework and the National Curriculum for Physical Education for Key Stage 1 and 2.

The skills and knowledge grid begins in EYFS and KS1 focusing on the basic skills of movement such as throwing, catching, running, balancing, jumping, spacial awareness, agility, and co-ordination along with team games. This then allows KS2 to build upon these skills and knowledge in sports specific lessons, taking part in competitive games, fostering leadership, and evaluating their performance, successes, and areas for improvement. Some of the sports include football, hockey, cricket, tennis, and rounders.

We know that School Sport and Physical Activity also help to shape a child’s lifestyle. Events such as Sports Days, competitions and enrichment days helps to raise the profile of physical education within our school and provide our children with extra opportunities. Break times and lunchtimes are organised to ensure that the children are being physically active through a range of different activities, outside of the curriculum, developing and embedding our school ANTLERS. Sports leaders are introduced in both KS1 and KS2, to support the delivery of physical activity at break and lunch times and support at Sports Days.

Impact

A well-sequenced PE curriculum allows our children to learn and develop fundamental basic skills and then use these within a variety of different sports. The impact of our curriculum is measured through pupil voice, lesson observations, photographs, and videos.

The opportunity to access Physical Education, School Sports and Physical Activity ensure that our children have the skills and knowledge to grow up to make lifelong, healthy choices to support their physical and mental health. Through being exposed to a variety of sports and developing physical confidence, children will be able to continue taking part in sports they love beyond school life and into the next stage in their education.

Through our PE curriculum, children will have developed an understanding of how to lead a healthy and active lifestyle both physically and mentally. They will develop confidence and competence in a range of activities and develop their teamwork, resilience, and communication skills.

Learners with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities

At Moorhill, we scaffold and adapt the learning in PE to enable all learners to succeed. Learning is adapted through:

- Explicit teaching and modelling using I do, we do, you do approach.

- Scaffolded resources

- Pictorial examples and representations

- Use of technological resources to support learning. For example: videos on iPads for demonstrations.

- Frequent revisiting of skills within a warm up.

- Adult support where possible.

- Adapted outcomes.
