Intent
At Moorhill, we aim to provide our children with the skills and knowledge for them to make healthy, active choices in their life and improve their life for the better. We understand the importance of a healthy body and a healthy mind and we provide plentiful opportunities to enhance this knowledge and support them in their journey through life.
Children have access to a wide range of sports during their PE lessons as well as in a competitive nature during School Sports and break and lunch time for Physical Activity. PE/SS/PA (Physical Education, School Sport and Physical Activity) allows the children to foster a passion for teamwork, sportsmanship and leadership as well as providing the children with opportunities to link with outside sports clubs.
The curriculum map has been designed to ensure that the National Curriculum requirements are fulfilled using a spiral curriculum design, thus ensuring that all children will constantly be revisiting knowledge, linking skills through different sports and being exposed to a variety of different sports. This progression through basic skills into sports allows out children to develop and revisit their skills and knowledge.
Implementation
Teachers use the Curriculum map to plan learning and sometimes alongside external support from team teaching and guidance from various professional bodies such as Chance to Shine Cricket and our SGO to enhance the delivery of our curriculum. Our PE curriculum has been designed following the National Curriculum for Physical Education for KS1 and KS2 and The Early Years Foundation Stage Framework.
The skills and knowledge grid begins in EYFS and KS1 focusing on the basic skills of movement such as throwing, catching, running, fluid movement and flexibility, which then allows KS2 to use this knowledge to link it to sports specific lessons with the added elements of competitive intra-school events. The knowledge is constantly revisited but allowing children to have the experience of a wide range of sports. Children at Moorhill will have experienced sports such as tennis, rugby, aerobics, dance, gymnastics, parkour, rugby and football, to name but a few.
Here at Moorhill, we know that School Sport and Physical Activity also help to shape a child’s lifestyle, so we ensure that a wide variety of inter school competitions are attended for children in KS1 and KS2. Break times and lunchtimes are also used to ensure that the children are being taught how to stay active, how to work together as a team and how to be creative in their play.We ensure that the children have access to 60minutes of physical activity every day – outside of PE time – to meet the national guidelines for primary aged children.
GoNoodle has been chosen for its child friendly nature that links to the theme of class dojo. Clubs are provided for the children to experience their favourite sports as well as try new ones both before and after school. Opportunities to compete and represent the school in sporting activities encouraged team spirit and helps to embed the school values of ambition, effort and respect.
Impact
Moorhill children are provided with a well sequenced PE curriculum that allows them to learn and develop basis skills and then use these within a variety of different sports.
The opportunity to access Physical Education, School Sports and Physical Activity ensure that our children will grow up to make lifelong healthy active choices to support their physical and mental health.
The high quality PE curriculum inspires the children to experience a multitude of experiences and encourages them to foster a hobby or interest that they can then develop further in with an outside agency. We provide these opportunities both within the classroom and outside for children to become physically confident to support their health and fitness.
Pupils will be taught to:
- use running, jumping, throwing and catching in isolation and in combination
- play competitive games, modified where appropriate [for example, badminton, basketball, cricket, football, hockey, netball, rounders and tennis], and apply basic principles suitable for attacking and defending
- develop flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance [for example, through athletics and gymnastics]
- perform dances using a range of movement patterns
- take part in outdoor and adventurous activity challenges both individually and within a team
- compare their performances with previous ones and demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best.
Sports Leaders from Year 6 feedback about the impact of the curriculum on them and work closely with our PE Leader to ensure the curriculum meets the needs to the children.
